Residence Life staff members have some guiding principles about their work with students, whether they are a Mentor on a residence hall floor or the Director of the building:

  • Help students understand what it means to be a positive community member and global citizen
  • Impact student learning in the areas of character development, community responsibility, learning, multicultural development, and personal well-being
  • Provide opportunities for residents to explore their world view
  • Provide mentorship to students so that they can integrate their acquired knowledge with their experiences and develop a clearer understanding of who they are and want to be
  • Offer resources and programs that will aid students in their growth and success
  • Demonstrate genuine interest in the welfare of all residents
  • Provide support to residents as they confront challenges and difficulties
  • Work with students to create civil living environments that promote dialogue, the understanding of differences, and encourage involvement.
  • Assist and challenge residents in their decision-making and help them explore the possible consequences of their decisions
  • Help residents become engaged with the campus community
  • Follow safety and emergency protocols, and respond as necessary to maintain a safe residence hall environment
  • Work with residents to ensure their hall environment is conducive to studying and sleeping
  • Plan activities and programs that help to create an enjoyable campus experience for residents
