Getting to a Rally Site
Leave your apartment and meet at a pre-arranged rally site. A rally site is a designated location at least 150 feet from your apartment building where your family will meet after they evacuate.
Secondary Exit
Plan for a secondary exit from your apartment in the event that your front door is blocked by smoke or fire. This will most likely be your bedroom window.
After evacuation from your apartment, go to your designed rally site and make sure your family is accounted for.
Introduce yourself to Police and Fire leaders when they arrive. Inform them of any missing members of your family and any information you have about the emergency.
Local TV and radio will issue severe weather alerts as follows:
Severe Thunderstorm Watch:
Conditions are possible for the formation of severe thunderstorms. Stay alert to oncoming storms.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning:
A severe thunderstorm has been seen or is coming to the area. Stay inside away from windows. Be prepared to take cover inside your apartment.
Tornado Watch:
Conditions are possible for the formation of tornados. Stay alert to oncoming storms. You can move to a designated shelter only if the warning sirens are not sounding. (Please call the MSU Police Department for the locations of on-campus shelters.)
Tornado Warning:
A tornado has been sighted in the warning area. The tornado siren will sound. If you are in your apartment, go to a room with no windows. This will most likely be your bathroom or a closet. Keep a radio or TV on so that you can stay informed of changing weather conditions and "all clear" announcements.
Campus Emergency Sirens:
Michigan State University has three sirens located across campus that will sound in the event of a tornado warning. These sirens are tested on the first Saturday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Again, to find information on designated sheltering, call the MSU Police Department at 355-2222.
Domestic Assault or Relationship Violence
The University has a relationship violence shelter on campus, called MSU Safe Place. MSU Safe Place works in conjunction with Eve's House to provide many programs. For immediate 24-hour crisis support and shelter (at Eve's House or MSU Safe Place), call 372-5572.
Train Derailment
You will be notified by local TV or radio, university personnel, or Police / Fire personnel in the event of a train derailment emergency. Follow their directions. Transportation to temporary shelters will be provided if necessary.
Gas Leaks
Evacuate your apartment immediately and call 9-1-1 from a safe location. Green light phones are available throughout the villages.
Call 9-1-1
Remember, if an emergency requires the assistance of Police, Firefighters, or Paramedics and an Ambulance is needed, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1
