Community Responsibility

Learning to live successfully with others who may have different values, beliefs and backgrounds is an essential element of the residential experience. Living in a residence hall, or a university apartment, presents extraordinary learning opportunities. To promote the development of engaged and responsible citizens of a diverse society, students are provided opportunities to set and maintain community goals, shape how their community will be, assume leadership roles, and accept responsibility as a member of a community.

Through participation in their on-campus residential communities, students will be encouraged and supported to expand their awareness, knowledge, and skills in the following areas:
  • Acting respectfully towards others
  • Connecting with others who share similar interests
  • Connecting with others who have different perspectives, beliefs and backgrounds
  • Articulating their beliefs, values and needs
  • Balancing personal values, beliefs, and needs with the values, beliefs, and needs of others in the community
  • Resolving differences with others
  • Giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Understanding the roles and responsibilities attached to being a citizen within a community
  • Respectfully engaging in dialogue with others who hold different values and beliefs
  • Appropriately addressing the actions and behaviors of others
  • Actively contributing to the definition and development of who they are as a community
  • Exploring their leadership skills and ability to lead others
